Shepard Fairey

Shepard Fairey is a name that most people would not recognize, but we see products of his work almost everywhere. He is a contemporary graphic designer, and his fame emerged mostly from the skateboarding scene. His popularity kicked off by the creation of stickers- specifically stickers bearing the image of Andre the Giant. He labeled the campaign "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" and declared it to be an "experiment in phenomenology". His art developed into large pastings on the sides of buildings, and even later into full-scale murals. OBEY also became a clothing company- which can be found in Urban Outfitters and also in several other stores notorious for expensive prices. He has several distinct works such as the Obama "HOPE" poster, and was involved in the compilation of the Led Zeppelin "Mothership" album cover. He has been arrested 16 times for vandalism throughout his career, and has been involved in large lawsuits regarding copyright claims that earned him both time in prison and millions of dollars in profit.
